Childen's Drug Abuse Prevention Program
Amethyst offers a Children's Health Promotion Program for 8 to 12 year-old girls and boys from the Ottawa-Carleton region whose parent(s) are in treatment recovery.
The children's program consists of eight sessions offered after school over eight consecutive weeks.
This experience helps the children to understand the importance of sharing feelings about addiction-related problems. From here, they can recognize and begin to deal with these feelings and xperiences.
In addition to learning about the addiction process the children are encouraged to develop attitudes which promote self-esteem -- feeling OK about themselves.
A Facilitator's Guide, written by Amethyst Women's Addiction Centre is available for you to order.
Children’s Play Therapy Program
This program is offered to 4-7 year-old girls and boys from the Ottawa Region who have a parent, guardian or sibling with a substance abuse and/or gambling problem and/or in recovery.
The 2½ hour six-week program helps the children understand what addiction is in simple terms. They also learn about: the different family dynamics and structures, how and who to talk to about their feelings, problem solving techniques, safety issues, simple stress management techniques and self-esteem.
