Amethyst's 1st Annual International Women's Day Event a Success!
March 8th, 2010 at the University of Ottawa
On March 8th, 2010 Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre in partnership with The Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre and The Sexual Assault Support Centre of Ottawa hosted a panel discussion entitled, Feminism: the other “F” Word. The two hour panel discussion featured the opinions of a diverse set of reputable, community-involved women on the modern meaning of “feminism” and its role in society today. The discussion focused on the meaning of feminism from different perspectives, ranging from the community level, such as its role with local organizations like Amethyst, to the international level, with a discussion about the diversity of feminism and the role of the female condition regarding such issues as sex trafficking around the world.
Following the panel’s presentation, a World Café Discussion was facilitated by Amethyst counsellor Gundel Lake, which allowed for further audience participation in exploring definitions of feminism and how the feminist movement is perceived by today’s society.
The International Women’s Day panel discussion was so thoroughly enjoyed by participants and audiences alike that Amethyst plans to make it an annual event.
